My Ikea Malm Dressing Table and Makeup Collection

Ikea Malm Vanity and Makeup Collection | Maddie's Beauty Spot

It has been a hot minute since I last blogged. I have had a hard time lately managing my life, and I hope you don’t mind me admitting that! One of my absolute favourite posts to read/pictures to look at on the internet, by far, is makeup organization posts. Specifically, posts with the Ikea Malm Vanity and Muji Drawers/PP Vanity boxes, as this is what I use myself. I didn’t buy my vanity desk until about 18 months into my makeup obsession, and I am very very lucky to have my own room in my house to do as I please with (aka, stuff as much makeup/skincare/clothes into as possible!). We have a three bedroom house with just my partner and our dog, so we each have a little office (Cody’s is full of musical instruments and computer/gaming equipment).

Almost all the furniture in my beauty room/office is from Ikea, bar the chair which is from Freedom Furniture and is the only piece of original furniture from when I first moved in with Codes a few years ago and my ladder bookshelf which is from Kmart. I really want to do an office tour one day soon, just need to work out how I want to style my shelves as at the moment, they’re a bit ‘meh’ to me!

On Top Of My Vanity

I have bought a few organizational items over the years which might not be available anymore, but I will link if I can! On my vanity, I have a basket which holds my eyeshadow palettes that I get a heap of questions on, it’s from HM Home from about April 2016. They don’t have this colour anymore, but I have purchased a Gold one and they also have black. You could always spray paint it as well. I first saw it on Gemma Louise’s blog, and since then someone has pinned my photo of it from my Instagram onto Pinterest and it’s been repinned >168K+ times, which is frankly, insane to me! I also keep my beauty blenders on top and near the window so they dry fully each day.

The copper cup holding my eye brushes is an empty candle I purchased from Woolworths late last year (2016) for around $6. My Woolworths has all sorts of random homewares – I’ve also gotten a pretty canvas from there and a few Gold photo frames from there!

My mirror is from Target and it came in a birch colour, which I (very badly) spray painted gold. If anyone sees a mirror similar to Tenneil’s or Sophie’s, please let me know as this is the number one thing I would change in my room.

The acrylic drawers are from Muji and they have a flip top, which I think I would actually prefer it didn’t, just because once you put items on top of it, it’s difficult to open the top drawer. I plan to purchase another two drawer set or similar when we go to Singapore in September. My very lovely sister in law brought this over for me at Christmas time last year, because we don’t have Muji here in Brisbane.

On top of this, I have a spotted pencil/toothbrush holder from HM Home, which I saw on countless UK blogger’s blogs and obsessively stalked HM Home until they got it in. The store is only about 40 metres from my desk at work so it’s not rare to find me in there often. This cup holds my face brushes.

Also on top of my drawers are a lot of my everyday skincare items. I actually store these in the Gold version of the copper basket now, and on the ladder bookshelf, you can slightly see to the right. I keep my daily body moisturiser (MOR’s Marshmellow, I couldn’t be without it) and setting sprays next to this, and also my Kmart copper mirror.

Foundations:

I have actually purchased a few more foundations and concealers since I took this photo a few weeks ago (unusual for me!). You can see I have a few favourites in here, Estee Lauder’s Double Wear (1C1 Cool Bone) and the Light version which is 1.0, Nars Sheer Glow in Deauville which I am trying to use up as it’s slightly dark, and Mont Blanc which is perfect. I recently purchased Marc Jacobs Remarcable in 14 Ivory and I’m still testing it out! Not in the photo are my new Hourglass Vanish Foundation Stick in Alabaster, Bobbi Brown’s Foundation Stick in Porcelain, and Tarte Amazonian Clay Foundation in Fairly Light Neutral.

In terms of concealers, I have MAC Prolongwear in NW20 (oldest item in this box and a bit dark for me now, but not as dark as it looks in the bottle), Urban Decay in Fair Neutral (borderline too light), Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer in Vanilla, Estee Lauder’s concealer in Light Cool. I also have Bobbi Brown’s corrector in Light Bisque. In addition to this, I have just purchased Tarte’s Shape Tape concealer in Light and I look forward to reporting back!

Declutter Series: Base Products

Blush:

I have quite a thing for blush as you can tell. I did a recent declutter and cleared out a few I wasn’t quite loving. I can say without fail, my favourite formula is Hourglass as it’s soft and blendable enough for me for every single day of the week. I’m so glad I managed to get this palette a few years ago via Shop and Box. My other Hourglass blush is Radiant Magenta I purchased when Loads of Lifestyle did her declutter. Other favourites in here include Nars and Too Faced. Don’t mind my reflection in my Hourglass palette! They are the hardest brand to photograph by far! In terms of palettes, I have my Hourglass trio from the 2014 holiday collection, Tarte’s Bling It On from 2015’s holiday collection and the recent Benefit Cheek Parade.

Highlighters:

I didn’t realise what a “thing” I had for highlighters until I took these photos… I’ve even bought one more since I took this as well! I prefer softer look in highlighters, that I can wear every day, such as the Hourglass strobe range, and the Tarte Exposed highlighter. Becca and MAC highlighters are reserved for evening wear or weekend wear for me. I recently purchased Benefit’s Dandelion Highlighter which is subtle as anything and I love it! I do want to do a declutter of this area soon, just because I don’t use some of them enough. My plan is to try using every single compact at least once to decide if it’s for me. Stay tuned!

Bronzers:

I’m not a big bronzer person, and I think it’s because I’m quite fair and many bronzers come off quite orange on me! I am planning to sell the Benefit Hoola below though because I have it in the Benefit Cheek Parade palette above with the blushes. I’ve since combined all of my blushes and bronzer into the same drawer as they fit quite well, with my two blush palettes sitting behind it in the drawer. I haven’t actually properly used my Nars Laguna Liquid in a makeup look out, only messed around with it. I do worry how it will come off in a full look in terms of blending. The Nars compact holds the Laguna and Orgasm powder duo.

Contour Kits/Powders/Setting Spray:

I keep a bunch of powders and contour kits in here, a “catch all” per say. I don’t tend to contour a lot, yet I seem to have a fair few! I’d need to try out the Nudestix more, but so far I find it to be very light and blendable. I also need to try out Chloe’s Revlon version a bit more – I loved it at first and just haven’t been into contouring much since.

I don’t use powders much unless I am using a bit greasy foundations like Nars Sheer Glow and stick foundations. I really love Napoleon Perdis’ Camera Finish powder, this is my second, and I just hit pan! It really evens out my complexion for photos and I also thinks it helps with liquid foundations that have SPF in them. I am leaning towards getting rid of the Australis version, just because I really don’t reach for it unless I am going somewhere and don’t want to take my more expensive powders to touch up with. I have also recently purchased the Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder in Ethereal Light which I have been enjoying.

I need to try my Estee Lauder loose powder a bit more though, loose powders are still so scary to me because of the mess! I’d love to try the Laura Mercier loose powder but I can’t justify it at the moment. I also keep my blotting sheets in here.

Single Eyeshadows:

Almost all of my single eyeshadows are cream based, and I didn’t use to use them much – preferring to use my palettes. Lately, I have been making an effort to use more of my shades, Stila’s Kitten has a serious dent in it! I haven’t used the Australis shadows yet, but I can’t wait for the opportunity to give them a proper go. I’ve been using my Laura Mercier sticks a little bit more lately, which I’m happy about because I have been a bit afraid of using them, just because they’re cream! I haven’t used much of the darker colours, for this reason, they are a little messy.

Eyebrows:

I have definite favourites in here… the Chi Chi Brow Pomade in Medium Brown (review here), Benefit Goof Proof in 3, Gimmie Brow in Medium/Dark/3. I want to do a review between the Benefit Browzings and Maybelline’s Pro Palette so I can get rid of the Browzings, it is just so old! This drawer can definitely be cleared out a little bit.

Mascara/Eyeliner:

I have only been keeping one mascara open at a time since my declutter in December. I think has been best to ensure I use up all of the product before I have to get rid of it! In terms of eyeliner, I stupidly opened a new Maybelline Master Precise before finishing the last one and now I have to have both open because I’m not sure which one is which. I keep a Bobbi Brown Sepia eyeliner in the pot which I bought after a Mecca Makeup Artist used it to tight line my eyes, but I’ve only used it once because I am a bit nervous of sticking anything in my eyes!

Primer:

I mostly have deluxe samples of primers such as the Benefit Porefessional which I quite like, but probably won’t repurchase because I don’t think it does a massive difference. In my collection, I also love the Hourglass primers in No.28 and Mineral Veil. I have repurchased both since this photo!

In terms of eye primers, I have been using up the Too Faced Shadow Insurance for what feels like years (at least two) and I have the Nars and Urban Decay primers as well which I have barely touched. I use primer every time I wear makeup so you’d think they would be finished by now! I also keep my mini Beauty Blenders in here but I don’t really reach for them, admittedly.

A Primer Collection (from 2015)

I hope you enjoyed my makeup collection/storage post. I will post a throwback post on Instagram of a few different setup’s I have had over the years for you all to enjoy or giggle at!

Image sourced from Katelavie.com

Lately, I have been thinking of selling my Malm Dressing Table as the drawer doesn’t pull out all the way, and I find it frustrating that I can’t store all my beauty products in one place. The set up I have been thinking of is using an Ikea Linnmon table top with Alex drawers in the middle and poles on either side, where I can use one side for applying makeup and the other for blogging, but I can access my products from the middle. Similar to the left, which I found on Pinterest from Kate La Vie.

Currently, my local Ikea is out of stock of the table top in the two-metre configuration so I will have to at least wait until that is in stock. I will also need to sell my Malm and my Micke Desk.

I do have irrational fears that by selling my Malm Dressing Table, I will regret it, and want it back so I might keep it for a short amount of time to decide. Has anyone else ever felt like this before?

Lastly, have you changed from the Malm to something else? What did you change to?

What do you love about your organisation area?
