The Order I Apply My Makeup

The Order I Do My Makeup // Maddie's Beauty Spot

Recently one of my friends mentioned her younger sister was getting more involved in makeup and was curious about the ‘right’ order to apply it in. Whilst I don’t think there is a ‘right way’, as everyone applies their makeup in a different order. I find it weirdly interesting to see the order people apply their makeup, so here is the order I apply my makeup for you to sticky beak at.

Primers:

Firstly I like to apply my face primer, at the moment I’m enjoying the pairing of the Hourglass Mineral Veil primer with my NARS Sheer Glow foundation, which smooths out my skin really well and helps the NARS foundation adhere to my skin well. I’m also loving the Hourglass No. 28 Serum Primer with my Estee Lauder Double Wear, it gives Double Wear a little bit of a glow and hydrates my skin (needed for such a dry foundation). For eyes, I’ve been trying to work my way through the Too Faced Shadow Insurance which I don’t love but it feels never ending!

Eyes:

Next, I like to apply my eyeshadow, mascara and eyebrow products. I try and rotate my way through my eyeshadow palettes so I’m not wasting them, but my current favourites are Tartelette in Bloom and Too Faced Chocolate Bar Palette. My favourite mascaras at the moment are the Estee Lauder Sumptuous Mascara and Tarte Lights Camera Lashes which I rotate between. For eyebrows, I’ve gone back to using Chi Chi’s Brow Pomade in Medium Brown since getting my eyebrows threaded, with Benefit’s Gimmie Brow on top.

Base:

Moving on to my base, I apply my foundation by swiping it around my face and then blending with my Beauty Blender. With NARS I’ve been told to apply with my hands and finish off with my Beauty Blender which I must admit, gives a luminous effect!

Next, I apply NARS Creamy Concealer in a downwards triangle under my eyes and against my nose, as I learnt in a recent Mecca Beauty Loop Lesson. With any excess, I apply to the bridge of my nose, and the connection of my forehead and nose. I let the concealer sit for a minute or two to really melt into my skin a little bit before blending in with my Beauty Blender. Once this is blended, I dip my sponge into my Rimmel Stay Matte Powder in Translucent and dab around my eye area. If I’m using NARS foundation I will also use a fluffy brush to apply a bit of powder to my face, if I’m using Double Wear I don’t need to.

Blush, Highlighter and Bronzer:

In terms of bringing colour back to my face, my absolute favourite Blush’s are the Hourglass Mood Exposure Blush and NARS Lustre. These both bring a perfect amount of shimmer, tone and luminosity to my cheeks. I also really love the Tarte formula when I’m feeling something more matte. For highlighter, I don’t wear it every day, but my favourites are the Hourglass Ambient Lighting Trio, and for a bit more glam I like the MAC Soft and Gentle highlighter. I definitely don’t get enough wear from the highlighters I’ve amassed, but it just doesn’t feel natural to me (ha!) to wear every day in an office. In terms of Bronzer, I wear it when I have a bit of time to blend it out correctly, and I lean towards NARS Laguna for a shimmery day, and Benefit Hoola for a matte day.

Setting Spray:

To finish off I usually apply my Australis Setting Mist which is much more of a flavoured water than anything, but I enjoy using it to set down my makeup and melt it into the skin a bit more. If I need makeup like NARS bases to last an extended period of time, I’ll use my Urban Decay Setting Spray.

Lips:

Lastly, I apply my lip colour (If I remember! This is something I need to work on). For every day I lean towards nudes as I work in an office, and for nights I will be a bit more daring and wear berry’s, red’s and generally more vampy shades.

What’s your routine?

I agree, everyone applies differently! I can mix mine up a lot, but it generally goes primers, bases, powder, blush, contour (if any), brows then lips. I’ve run out of setting spray so I need to pick a new one up! There’s so many now, I might try something new 🙂

    • I reckon it’s so interesting! Like how Jacq was saying the other night she does a full face with contour everyday! I hope to be quick enough to do that before work one day haha

I’ve heard the Maybelline one is good for the price.

It is so interesting to read how others apply their make-up! I actually do primer, base, brows, setting powder, then eyes, contour, blush and highlight followed by setting spray and lipstick. Writing that dpwn, actually makes me feel like I do mine a bit weirdly haha! x
